| Comics
and graphic novels are the main thing that I truly love to do.
It's what gets me going every morning. I love
telling stories. And comics is a great medium to do just
that. The funny thing is that comic books have gotten such a bad wrap
for so long. Kids stuff. Disposable. Garbage.
And on and on. I do think that's starting to change
and as more great work is discovered, the more open people are to what
the medium can be. I
think the critical acceptance of both Art Spiegelman's Maus
and,
more recently, Gene Yang's American
Born Chinese have certainly helped that.
Comics can be anything:
the medium offer storytelling possibilities
in any form of genre (including superheroes) and I don't believe that
we've even scratched the surface of what can be done. I've written and drawn the comics that you see below. Each link will bring to a thumbnail page for that particular title. Once you've clicked on one of the thumbnails, you can navigate within the pages to read each full short story. Brawl is
an eight page story featuring
Marie, the main character from the
road to god knows... and a little
dream she's having. It's a whimsical story and I was loosely
thinking of Windsor McCay's Little
Nemo in Slumberland when I gave up with it. Brawl can be found
by clicking the image at the left or just by clicking right here.
For those who are interested in the writing side of things,
this scripts
link will show you how I put the story together.
Or you can click here for the first step in the writing
process, the breakdown. Fast
Friends depicts how Marie and Kelly first met.
Friendship forms a major part of the road to god knows...
and as a result of that I really wanted to do a story that showed them
younger and forging bonds that will be so important five years later.
It's also a story that saw print first. It was given away as
a signed limited 300 copy ashcan at APE
2007. Click the art at the left to start reading or just click
here. As with Brawl,
all of the background writing
is available here. Or you can jump right
into the breakdown, step one of my writing process, here. The last short story featuring the
characters from the
road to god knows... is The Old Crow.
It focuses on a young Marie and her burgeoning awareness that
things are not right with her mom. This definitely sets the
stage for Betty's problems with mental illness five years later in the
graphic novel. I think, well I hope, it's a poignant look at
mother and daughter. Click
here or the logo at the left to read it. Again, the
scripts
link has a lot of background writing or you can start with
the breakdown right
here. Of course, there's the road to god knows...
itself. It is now complete and can be read online at
GirlAMatic.com. The story, of course, deals with a Marie who
is about 13 years old. She's now coping with her mom's
continued descent
into mental illness and schizophrenia. How she struggles with
that and how her friendship with Kelly developes is what forms the plot
of the story. While being a teenager isn't easy for anyone,
Marie certainly has a lot on her plate. And while her mom isn't a bad
person in any way, Marie is left to come to her own conclusions about
her situation. Click here or the logo at left to
read the story online. Stargazer
is my next project and it's a major departure from what I've
done before. While the launch date is still up in the air,
you can see all kinds of concept art by following this
link or by clicking the logo at the left. It'll be
interesting to see how people react to it. |
