The Old Crow: a road to god knows... adventure! |
||
| The Old Crow is the
most serious of the three interlocking comic book stories and
better sets the tone for both the mental illness aspects of the road to god knows...
and the relationship between Betty and her daughter. A very
young Marie is slowly becoming aware that all is not right with her mom
and we see that awareness as this story unfolds. She's also realizing
just how powerless she is in the face of it. There's very little she
can do for her mom except love and support her. That's all
well and good, of course, but there's little solace in that.
And a lot of loneliness for a girl who has no siblings and
few friends. This is all similar ground that is covered in the graphic novel, of course, but I wanted to do a story that showed just how long Betty's struggle with mental health had been going on. Most people with similar issues, let alone schizophrenia, do not suddenly just wake up one day having problems. Rather, it's a slow spiral and a gradual awareness that things aren't right. On top of it, it's very difficult to halt. Betty doesn't want this to be happening to her but she can't stop it. She's just trying to cope, day by day, as best she can. Toss in poverty into the mix and the fact that she's a single mom and I think one can get a sense of just how hard things are for her. Betty is a loving person. She's just in trouble. This story shows that. I hope you like it. If you click on the thumbnails below, that page will open. And you can navigate within each page, too.
