Christmas Card Design

For the first time in a long time, I decided (with some gentle nudging from my wife!) a Christmas card. This features the wizards Bill and Butch along with their press agent (!) from the short story The Cowardly Clerics of Rigel V. Pencils, at least when I am inking and colouring my own work, are pretty loose and sketchy. In some ways these are a little tighter than I normally do, but I still leave quite a bit of room for working these out at the inking stage. That has a lot to do with time, but also keeps the inks and even the final colouring a bit more fresh and fun than it might otherwise be. As always, it's an "inside-my-head" kind of thing that hopefully makes sense to you, dear reader. You can see the inked staged and final colour version right after the pencils below.

Mental illness, gender, poverty, and the Salvation Army

The following statement was sent to the City of Ottawa's Councillors in regards to the proposed Salvation Army's new shelter to be built here in the Vanier community.

To whom it may concern,

My mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was a pre-teen. She was a single mom and we often found ourselves in pretty tough situations. We were also on welfare, facing both financial difficulties as well as my mom’s struggle with mental illness.

I was born in Arnprior but my mom and I relocated to Ottawa when I was 8 years old. I’ve grown up in this city and I’ve been a resident of the downtown core most of my life. I should add that my wife and I bought a home in Vanier in 2010. So I’m not just a resident of Ottawa and I’m not just a taxpayer; I’m also a home owner not that far away from where the Salvation Army proposes to build their new shelter on Montreal Road.

Relevant to this email is the fact that I’m also in a documentary film that focuses on the children of mentally ill parents. Titled “I Am Still Your Child,” the film just started streaming on CBC and will air nationally across CBC Television in January. In conjunction with the film, a number of video shorts were recently released. One of them deals with the financial impact of mental illness. When I reflect on my childhood, the reality of my mom’s health and financial situation, and the proposed Salvation Army shelter, I’m struck by the fact that my mom, being a woman, would have found no help there. And she, being a mom, would not have been able to get help for her family, either. Yes, I’m well aware that there are other shelters in the city that can and do help. At the end of the day, however, a new shelter will be constructed that will discriminate based on gender. That is unconscionable in 2017. And it is a sad, sad statement that if I was a child today, living in the same circumstances that I grew up in, my mom would not be able to turn to a brand new state of the art facility for help when she would have needed it most.

I should add that my mom did not win her struggles with either schizophrenia or poverty. She died in 1994, at the age of 48.

I would strongly urge you to pause and reflect on what a new shelter could and should be. A shelter featuring gender equality and one free of religious dogma. If it was both of those things, even if the location and the size were the same, I would support it. Because my mom might have needed it. And we know that other girls and women of all-ages and sexual orientations will need it. Desperately.

The proposed shelter by the Salvation Army is not the solution. It’s no solution at all. I urge you to vote against it.

And Ottawa city council passed the Salvation Army proposal over the protests of just about everyone.

Gesture Sketches

I often do gesture studies as a quick way to warm up. I like using ballpoint pens (good ol' blue ink) to roughly lay in the figure. Ballpoint has the advantage that it doesn't allow you to get fussy, a good thing to avoid in quick gestures. In fact, my general approach to thumbnails and layouts are not that different then how I approach gestures. The main difference between the two is that, for thumbnails, I don't usually add black ink to them. For gestures, adding a bit of black ink really brings 'em alive. In the ones below, I was using a Pilot brush pen. Quick and clean.

Each gesture took about five minutes, including inking with the brush pen. They're all small, just done on letter-sized paper. These aren't technically life-drawings; I was working from photos or from my imagination rather than a real human being. But they're fun and a nice way to loosen up!

Documentary Short - Coping Strategies

I'm one of the subjects of a documentary titled I AM STILL YOUR CHILD, dealing with parental mental illness. In conjunction with the film, a number of short videos have been released; kinda like extra features on a film. The below deals with coping strategies. In my case, my mom was dealing with schizophrenia and it led to some pretty rough experiences. Being able to escape into comics as well as sci-fi and fantasy really helped. Sarah and Jessy, two other subjects from the film, also talk about their strategies in the short.

The entire short series can be viewed on the film's official Youtube page. They add up to over 30 minutes of bonus content. While the documentary is only available for streaming inside Canada right now, the short videos should be watchable anywhere in the world.

WOLF'S HEAD proof copy and pics

WOLF'S HEAD, my new comic book, is slowly but surely becoming a real thing! Okay, okay, in my head and in my art it has been for a long time, but I recently started finalizing the printing of it. So the pics below are from the printer proof. Pretty neat, eh? It's always a bit scary to receive a proof; that's the point that you gulp hard before you look at it, hoping that you don't have to do a large number of fixes. But everything looks great and I think the proof turned out very, very well.

Not quite sure about release dates yet, but certainly by the end of 2017 at the latest.
